Writing Prompts

I have had trouble getting posts finished although I have many of them started and almost done I still haven’t got around to completing them to post. Because of this I have been left with tons of writing prompts I’ve been using that have helped me get my creative energy flowing.

Those rare times I went to class in high school I remember specifically this one time in English class we did a writing exercise this teacher called “mad dash think fast” for whatever reason that was it stuck in my brain.. to break it down quick, you take any prompt you want and set a timer for 10 minutes, you can’t stop writing with the print you chose until the timer ends.

Even if you mess up keep going and change it later. Get all you thoughts out through this prompt and create something unique with that.

“It’s crazy what we can think of when we pour it all out onto the page in one go with noting holding us back.”

Dialogue Prompts

• You are on the astronaut team that has finally made it to Mars. You arrive enthusiastic and proud, only to quickly discover exact copies of your team have already arrived. Write the dialogue between yourself & your exact copy the first time you interact.

• It’s the middle of the night and you haven’t gotten any sleep in almost a day. As you are getting into bed someone pounds at the door, loudly. Startled you don’t answer and pretend you are asleep already hoping however that was will leave. Suddenly the door blasts open, “POLICE!” Is all you hear. Write the dialogue between yourself and the officers that you encounter.

• You finally landed the job you’ve wanted for so long. Now that you’ve been there for a a few years you are close with the owners of the business and treat each other like family. Until one day out of the blue, your boss—friend—comes up to you in the middle of your shift and tells you he has to let you go. Write your response to the following and keep the dialogue going as long as you can. “Hey man, I don’t really want to do this to you but I have to let you go. No hard feelings?”

Short Story (Mystery)

• It had been years since this case had been cold. Finally a tip to catch the killer that was on the run for…

• The leaves blew down the dusty dirt road and the crowd cawed in the distance. Something didn’t feel right and before I knew it…

• As I opened the back door to let the dogs out I saw something behind the shrubs and before I could stop them they were after it…

Short Story (Fantasy)

• The whistling wind soared high above the mountain tops and the wings of the Great Medallion could be seen through the thickest cloud in the sky. The dark blue skin almost matched the sky at night making it nearly invisible when it reached its max speed. No one knew where it came from or what it could possible do… except me.

• This ancient cemetery has been around for thousands of years and the local papers had been talking about the legends of a special gravestone. One belonging to one of the wealthiest alive in those times, possibly containing more money I’d ever know what to do with. The only problem was no one knew which grave it was and many people had already been here digging. Many of them caught and arrested. But I had a plan…

• I had always heard of a fairytale fantasy but never seen one in real life. Now that I’m older and this technology has advanced these kids spend all their time in their own world. Recently they’ve taken it too far and there’s been a major glitch in the new fantasy game they just released, Fairies of the Fire. Kids have been getting stuck in this game somehow sucked into their screens… I didn’t believe it until now.. staring at a screen looking at where I was once sitting it suddenly became hotter around me… and I slowly began flying…

Descriptive

• Recently I thought about… it made me feel… and I started wishing for…

• I’m so indecisive I never know which way I want my bedroom arranged so I have to change it up every month or so. This time I decided to… I even changed… and decided to… now everything looks…

• I wish you were here. You could see what I see… the sound of the water and the way the sun feels on my face. I slowly opened my eyes to the sky and saw…

Persuasive

If you don’t want to ___ you will after you hear this… If you want to ___ you won’t want to after you hear this…

• Why wouldn’t you want to go skydiving at least once in your life? Not forever just once to try it. You could feel the rush of energy and…

• I’m here to tell you sleep is important. I know this because I personally struggle with sleep and if you don’t get enough trust me, you will feel like shit. If you get too much, you still won’t feel good. Sleep is like porridge, it has to be just right and that can be different for everyone. That doesn’t change the fact that sleep is important because…

Short Story (Comedy)

• The local fall fair had been going on for a day and night already. The second day had been wrapping up and the crowd was anxiously waiting for the smash up derby to start. The announcers could be heard mumbling over the mic until their conversation suddenly began broadcasting over the PA system…

• I had never been to a comedy club before but I know the number one rule is to not talk when the comedian is preforming. Definitely don’t interrupt. This one guy at my table apparently forgot that important rule and oh boy what happened next I’ll never forget…

• It had been hard the past couple weeks. My dog ran away.. my mother almost burnt the house down learning how to cook again.. and my damn wallet is still lost and I can’t get a new one because of COVID. Sometimes you have to make a joke out of life when it makes a joke out of you… just then I got the impulse to go get a haircut…

I am human, just like you. I have been around for 20 years and although it may not be a lot of time to some, it feels like I've been alive forever. To cope with all the things my life has given me; good and bad, I've always been a writer. Maybe I didn't know or necessarily want to be a writer, but I was always on the creative side, not really understanding how different I was from others; I'm really not that different from you. To this day I'm still eager to learn more about myself, to improve and grow amorphously. I want to use this fuel of constant self-discovery as the direct source of 'energy' that can create whatever I want it to, making writing for me a healthier coping mechanism than most I've tried in my lifetime. That being said, I believe that starting my blog, The Existentialist, (all thanks to Wordpress and Bluehost teams) I finally have the opportunity and creative outlet to unleash my passion for art; writing. The beginning is never easy, and it won't get much easier I am aware. I can only believe in myself and keep my expectations to a minimum; I like to believe I hold no expectations, but they seem unavoidable. To whoever reads this, I'm not one to care about views or reads, I won't encourage/pressure you to read my work because for me, the thrill really comes from just making a finished piece of work I'm happy with, regardless if it is read by others or not; judgement from others is what I've feared all my life. I can only encourage you to have an open mind as a reader and believe in me as much as I believe in myself to accumulate the courage to start showing my creative writing(art) to the world. Everybody creates things in their lifetime, I am just another one of those beings; whether you like it or not, nouns (persons, places and 'things') exist to teach us something about ourselves. There is always more to learn...
