What is Copyright?

Copyright is a type of intellectual property that gives its owner the exclusive right to make copies of a creative work, usually for a limited time. The creative work may be in a literary, artistic, educational, or musical form.

What is the punishment for copyright infringement?

If found guilty of copyright infringement in a magistrate’s court, your business could be fined up to $50,000 and you could face a jail term of up to six months. If the case reaches a Crown Court, fines can be unlimited and the maximum sentence up to ten years’ imprisonment. The scale of the infringement has an impact.

How do you get copyrighted?

The initial filing of a copyright application will cost between $50 and $65 depending on the type of form, unless you file online which will then only cost you $35. There are special fees for registering a copyright application claim in a group or obtaining additional certificates of registration as well.

How long does copyright last?

The term of copyright for a particular work depends on several factors, including whether it has been published, and, if so, the date of first publication. As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years(USA). In Canada, it is the life of the creator, plus 50 years after their death. Therefore, copyright protection will expire on December 31 of the 50th year after the creator dies.
