Trigger warning: this post is blunt and biased. Read at your own risk.

I’ve started to conclude that people who are heavily religious rather trust and believe in something other then themself. Simple as that. They do not want to carry responsibility for their own life, or not all of it at least. The more religious a person is, the less they seem to be responsible for any bad/good thing to happen in their life. My slim evidence of this is, when good things happen they believe “it’s God, It’s a miracle” but when it’s bad they think of the devil. They never think “it might be me. I might play a part in my own life.” More slim evidence is those God saving stories, when of course handing over their worries to someone else(alive or dead) would be relieving themselves of all their responsibilities in life and would obviously change how they feel, especially if they believe it’s not their responsibility.

I used to get confronted when I was transitioning before starting HRT(Hormone Replacement Therapy), it was obvious I was queer to anyone walking on the street. The old people hanging around the churches downtown would tell me I’m going to hell, a classic, or that I’m stuck in a phase, also heard often. At school it was no different really, when I came out in grade 10 it made me realize who were friends and who were foe.

Not long after this began, when I was still living with my mom I started going to a Christian youth group (as an excuse to get out and get free food) but I noticed a lot of these kids and parents don’t know what they’re getting into. It’s called a “Christian Youth Group” but there were more games and philosophical talk than reading the Bible. The pastor there would go over each edition of the Bible with just a PowerPoint they put together of the history of the Bible. I suppose it could be anything really, but when I grew up I realized he was trying to teach the ‘real history’ of the Bible. When these kids asked questions, the pastor couldn’t even answer them so the kids always went home more confused than when they walked in. Some I talked to even felt like a “burden to god” by not bettering themselves and how their parents got mad when they missed a prayer.

It just blew my top off, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing from these kids. This is why I avoided religion for a long time. After bad experiences through being trans, my appearance etc. I didn’t trust the church. I didn’t know people had taken religion so far.. the really proved to me that you can make the rules up as you go along. It’s crazy to think about how much religion used to run the world.. and ironic to know it still does but on the down low.. shoved beneath the rug and hidden under the floorboards. No one will know if it can’t be seen right?

When a person leans towards science and spirituality more than religion it shows me how much that person trust themselves and their ability to handle their own thoughts. To take responsibility for anything that occurs in their life, even if it was not intended. This seems to be the line that religious philosophers dared to cross… not why we’re really here or if there is a God or not, but what kind of person we are for the time that we’re alive regardless or if we know why or not. Are you someone who knows there is something bigger out there? Are you someone who knows God is watching your every move? Are you someone who believes in your own truth, and only yours?

Bottom line religious people are insecure with themselves and if they could think of the world without a God, or one creator, it would probably be a worse one.. one they are afraid to know.
